Anne with cats

When a cat care volunteer arrives for their shift at the Hopalong office in Oakland, the cat rooms are already full of excitement. Curious faces peek out from condos, some eager to say hello, others content to watch from a cozy bed. A few cats greet volunteers with chirps or a rub against the door, while others take their time warming up. But every shift starts with the same goal: making sure each cat feels safe, comfortable, and cared for.

The day begins with the essentials. Volunteers tidy condos, refill food and water bowls, and scoop litter boxes. It may not be glamorous work, but it’s incredibly important. A clean, calm environment helps reduce stress for the cats and allows staff to keep a close eye on their health and well-being.

Once the basics are taken care of, volunteers can focus on socialization, which is often the most rewarding part of the day. That might mean playing with energetic kittens, offering gentle pets to friendly cats, or simply sitting quietly with a shy cat who needs patience and reassurance. These moments of connection help build trust and confidence, making cats more comfortable with people and better prepared for adoption.

Throughout the shift, cat care volunteers also help with washing dishes, cleaning carriers, restocking supplies, and noting any changes in a cat’s behavior or health. Because Hopalong is a small facility, volunteers work closely with staff, which gives volunteers an opportunity to learn and ask questions.

Before heading out, volunteers usually take one last look around the rooms. The cats are calmer now: fed, comfortable, and often curled up for a nap. Knowing they helped make the cats’ day a little better is what keeps many volunteers coming back. Their support also allows staff to focus on medical care, adoptions, and the many moving parts of daily operations.

Cat care volunteering is all about giving cats the time and care they need to thrive. For anyone who loves cats and wants to make a meaningful difference, it’s a wonderful place to start.
