By Kecia Talbot It was my first thought when I saw her on the side of the road, and I immediately pulled over and stopped. She was in an odd place – two inches from the solid white line along the shoulder of northbound I-5 about a half-hour south of Bakersfield. She was lying upright with her front paws crossed, seemingly waiting to die. I don’t remember how, but I got her in the car and went looking for a veterinarian in Bakersfield. This was 24 years ago, before smartphones, and I located a pay phone with a Yellow [...]

Cat Whispering

Sure, the occasional sprinkle in summer, but as a routine, it “never happened.” Last week, as I anticipated the arrival of our friend, Bob, for our weekly morning walk I was executing the morning routine of preparing for our walk in a more than usually sporadic manner, putting leashes and harnesses on earlier than necessary and then wandering around the house in a daze doing weird little chores, biding time until the designated hour of 8:30 when [...]

Getting a lift instead of giving one Since the beginning of 2022, both Susie Harper and I have had the joy and pleasure of traveling to North Africa, Susie to Morocco and I to Egypt (and Jordan, which is technically part of Eurasia). For this blog we’ve teamed up with our collective photos and our conflicted thoughts about experiencing other animals (we’ll leave the human species for other bloggers) in different cultures. Moroccan cats       Susie and I had the first world privilege of traveling with the same well-known tour [...]
