DogAdoptions-PuppiesIt has been one full year since our new dog adoption area opened and our first canine adoption candidates filled the rooms. We are so blessed to have had many individuals donate to this major remodeling project, with especially generous support from the DMARLOU Foundation, Rockstar Beverage Corporation, Joseph Drown Foundation, and the individual kennel sponsors (special thanks to the donors listed below who gave $2,500 or more to this important endeavor). Without all of these gifts, our adoption dogs would not be able to enjoy this much-improved environment while they await their forever homes.

Our staff spent a great deal of time and energy planning every detail, as well as consulting with UC Davis’ Veterinary School advisors. Today, we can say it has paid off. All our planned features – from the skylights, air circulation and noise reduction – are helping to improve the physical and mental well-being of our canine residents.

DogAdoptionsadoptorMany staff and volunteers feel the new space is much quieter for both people and animals, and frequently visitors remark at how beautiful and inviting the space is. The additional areas where potential adopters are able to interact with adoption dogs are also well-used and much appreciate.

We are happy to report that we saw a 7.6% increase in the number of dogs and puppies adopted during October 2011-September 2012, as compared with the previous 12-month time period. And, we were honored to gain national attention when our new space was featured last spring in Animal Sheltering, a publication of the Humane Society of the United States (not an affiliate of MHS).

As we approach the Thanksgiving season, we are so thankful to everyone who supported the building of the dog adoption area. You have truly made a difference in the lives of the hundreds of dogs who have resided at MHS in the past year, and your generosity will continue to touch the lives of countless more in the years to come. We’re sure that the dogs who are more relaxed and comfortable would love to express their gratitude as well, so please visit MHS and see their wagging tails and happier souls in person! Our shelter is open to the public every day except Mondays.
