Greetings Volunteers,
Doesn’t it feel like winter is upon us? Hope you and your pets are snuggling up at home keeping warm and dry 🙂
Shelter Update: We currently have 257 animals in our collective care. 198 are at Marin Humane: 70 animals in foster and 128 animals in the shelter/Kitty Corner, including: 22 dogs, 55 cats, 27 kittens, 9 rabbits, 4 guinea pigs, 5 reptiles, 4 birds, and 2 fowl. 59 animals are with Hopalong: 7 animals are in the Oakland office and 52 cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies are in foster or offsite adoption sites!
Adoptions update: We’ve been busy around here, as you can see from all the awesome adoptions in our weekly adoption slideshow! Congrats to all the adopters; thank you for choosing to adopt and giving these animals the second chance they so deserve! In case you want more details, here’s the Adoption Report.
Hopalong happenings! As the year is coming to an end, we want to shine the spotlight on the dog who’s been in our foster program the longest. King came into our care in early 2024, and since then he has been patiently waiting for his forever home. We believe 2025 will be his year! This handsome boy loves long walks, playing tug of war with his favorite toys and basking in the sun. King is 7 years old, house-trained and crate trained. We recommend he goes to a home where he would be the only pet, or to a home with similarly sized dog(s). This is because he’s still learning boundaries and can get overly excited in situations. Take a look at his profile and consider sharing it with folks in your network who might be interested in a sweet boy like King! We’re hoping he can find a home willing to put the time and effort into helping him live up to his namesake!
Tails of Marin: With holiday lights twinkling inside and outside homes, Christmas trees up and decorated with ornaments, and lots of activity, it’s clear we’re in the holiday season. While it’s a festive time for most of us, the season still poses hazards and threats to our pets. Nothing can spoil good cheer like a lost pet or an emergency trip to the veterinarian, so keep these tips in mind when decorating and celebrating, “Keeping your pets safe and happy during the holidays.”
Volunteer High Five to Theani Louskos! “Theani has been one of Animal Care’s most reliable volunteers over her 7+ years with us! As a cat feeder for all these years, Theani gets to know the shelter cats and lets us know if anything is “off” with the cats. She has her regular weekly shifts and is always the first to step-up to pick up additional shifts when a volunteer calls out sick or is on vacation. This may not sound like a big deal, but in our department, it’s a REALLY BIG DEAL! Thank you, Theani, for your great attitude and willingness to come in when we need you !” ~ Kyle Dunlop, Animal Care Supervisor
Volunteer High Five to Christine Maimon-Duclos! “A few weeks ago, we received 28 rabbits from Animal Services. With the RHDV rabbit virus still in full swing, these little buns needed to go into quarantine. It’s a bit tough for the bunnies as they cannot get as much socialization as they will when they’re out of quarantine. But fear not, volunteer and rabbit-lover Christine Maimon-Duclos came to the rescue by making elaborate rabbit enrichment toys! Now these rabbits have something to play with and enjoy while quarantined. We’re so grateful to Christine for the many tasks she takes on in Animal Care, and for going the extra mile by making 30 enrichment toys for our small furry critters. We know they great appreciate your efforts … and so does the staff!” ~ Kyle Dunlop, Animal Care Supervisor
Chihuahuas galore! A few days ago, 27 chihuahas were found abandoned in crates on the side of the road in Calistoga. Napa County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center took swift action to get the dogs to safety and provide them with necessary care. The Napa shelter was already overwhelmed with dogs, so two of our staff members headed straight to Napa and brought 9 of the adorable pups back to Marin Humane. It’s heartbreaking that these pups were abandoned, and it’s heartbreaking to think that whoever left them felt they had nowhere to turn and no other options. But we’re so glad that these dogs are safe now and get to find amazing new homes. You can find the cuties we brought to Marin on our website – and we’ve named them after cast members from the most recent season of The Great British Bake Off because they’re such sweet treats! Andy, Christiaan, Dylan, Georgie, Jeff, John, Mikey, and Paul are all available on a foster-to-adopt basis while they wait for their neuter surgeries with our shelter veterinarians.
