Hello Volunteers,

It’s February and you know what that means! It’s Adopt A Rescued Rabbit Month! The reason behind celebrating this month is that rabbits are the third most common pet found at animal shelters and they need loving homes. There’s no question about it: bunnies are absolutely adorable. With their long, soft ears, twitchy noses and bright eyes, there’s a whole lot to love. They make amazing companions and fabulous fluffy friends. And there are plenty of rabbits looking for homes, click here to meet Chips, Juju, Lulu, Olivia and Spencer!

Shelter update: We currently have 248 animals in our collective care. 125 are at our Novato campus, including 28 dogs, 1 puppy, 68 cats, 5 kittens, 7 rabbits, 9 guinea pigs, 3 rodents, 2 reptiles, and 2 fowl. 8 animals are in our Oakland office; 12 are at Kitty Corner and the Woodlands stores; and 103 are in foster homes.

Adoption update: Happy Wednesday! We closed out January with a great week of adoptions and we’re excited for another month of matchmaking magic! We hope everyone had a beautiful week, now let’s get even more animals adopted this week! 💪 #adoptdontshop! Here’s the adoption slideshow for your viewing enjoyment, and Adoption Report for more details!

Hopalong happenings! Hopalong received a sweet update from one of our fosters named Leah who adopted her foster puppy, Bear (formerly Goose), last year. Leah told us, “Bear gets along so well with all the dogs at my parents’ house. He even plays with my sister’s dog who is way too big to play with at his size, but he seems to love it! He’s officially 4 months old this week and loves rocks, sticks, and even bringing worms in the house from the backyard…My mom doesn’t like it so much. Every person he meets, he becomes obsessed with wanting their attention and pets, but one of my favorite things about him is that he loves to cuddle at night.” Thanks for the update, Leah – We are so happy to hear that Bear is loving his fur-ever home!

Looking for Foster Screeners! Do you enjoy talking to people from the comfort of your own home? If so, we’d love to have your help as a Foster Screener. You would review foster applications, speak with potential fosters about their home environments and the expectations for our foster homes, and share the results of your conversations with the Hopalong team. Check out the Foster Screener Job Description. If you’re interested in learning more, please contact Katia Kiefaber at kkiefaber@marinhumane.org.

Tails of Marin: February heralds skunk mating season, and our striped friends have romance on their minds! 💕🦨. Read this week’s Tails of Marin, “Love’s in the air – It’s skunk mating season” to learn more about the great value skunks bring to the ecosystem … and how you and your dog can avoid encounters with our stripey friends!

Mountain lion presentation: Marin Humane and the Felidae Conservation Fund will be hosting a virtual presentation on “Wild Cats in California’s Urban Areas” on Wednesday, February 25th from 6-7pm. With mountain lions in the news lately, the timing is just right to join this Zoom meeting where Felidae will cover the natural history, ecology, the state of pumas in CA, and share findings from their research, and just as importantly, how to prevent human-wildlife conflict. Use the QR code on the flyer to RSVP or email info@bapp.org.

Animal Advocacy Day: Since its founding in 1907, Marin Humane has been a leading voice when it comes to advocating for animals. It’s something ingrained in our DNA. We keep our finger on the pulse of important issues, collaborate with other advocates, lend our voice when needed, and lobby for change. Please consider joining us for Animal Advocacy Day in Sacramento on Tuesday, March 3rd from9am-4pm. Animal Advocacy Day brings together passionate advocates, state lawmakers, and animal welfare leaders from across California for a powerful day of action at the State Capitol. Together, we raise awareness about legislative efforts to address our state’s most urgent challenges to pet owners and shelters, including access-to-care barriers and the ongoing veterinary shortage. This lobby day is a wonderful chance to be with others who are willing to, as a group, encourage our legislators to support our animal welfare bills, learn about the issues being supported and meet with the staff and/or elected officials in our state capitol. Please let me know if you’d like to join us and we’ll get you more details, including carpooling options to Sacramento!

What is my cat saying? Cats are probably one of the most misunderstood of all domestic animals. This workshop is about learning to read cat body language. Would you like to better understand what your cat is saying and how your body language affects your communication with your feline friends? Learning to see the subtle signs of what a cat is saying will allow you to predict their behavior. This class is very useful for any volunteer working with cats, or for folks who have cats who bite them unexpectedly or if you simply want to better understand your cat. Click here to register for this Zoom workshop..

Have a great week,

Candace
