Greetings Volunteers,
I’m back from vacation and happy to share this post with updates, articles to read, and happy endings! Happy reading!
Shelter update: We currently have 306 animals in our collective care. 233 are at Marin Humane: 93 animals in foster and 140 animals in the shelter/Kitty Corner, including: 22 dogs, 9 puppies, 54 cats, 23 kittens, 9 rabbits, 7 guinea pigs, 2 rodents, 4 reptiles, 6 birds, and 4 fowl. 73 animals are with the Hopalong Foster Program: 10 animals are in the Oakland office and 63 are in foster or offsite adoption sites!
Adoption update: Happy Wednesday! It’s your lucky day — three adoption slideshows to enjoy! Here’s the slideshow for May 19 – 25; and for May 26-June 1; and for June 2-8 … We’re really celebrating this last slideshow as some of the animals who’ve been with us the longest FINALLY found their forever homes! Did you know Brendon (pictured here) has been in one shelter or another since August of 2023?! And now, he’s snuggling with a real family of his own. Hooray! #adoptdontshop. Now, we’re gearing up for another week of finding forever homes for our animals. Congratulations to all the adopters!

Hopalong happenings: We’re very pleased to welcome Katia Kiefaber to the Marin Humane family! Katia is excited to join the Hopalong team as our Hopalong Program Volunteer Engagement Coordinator. She previously worked at Jewish Family and Community Services East Bay as a Volunteer Coordinator, so she is familiar with non-profit volunteer management. However, this is her first time working in animal care. Although Katia loves all animals, marine animals and cats are her favorite – particularly her kitty Hadley. Katia grew up in the Bay Area (Mountain View) but lived in Massachusetts during most of her 20s. She currently lives in Berkeley with her wife and cat. In her free time, she likes to hike, bake/cook, and read mystery novels. Katia is pictured here with her feline BFF, Hadley. We know you’ll enjoy working with Katia!
Happy ending! “A couple of months ago, my daughter and I adopted a cat named Orson. We had intended to meet a different kitty, but she wasn’t feeling very well. Orson stood in his little cubicle entreating us with his friendly face, so we asked to meet him instead. Love at first purr! The moment we brought him home – and renamed him Pedro – he was family. An incredibly confident, friendly cat was instantly home. Pedro is a 10/10 cat -a purring machine who loves a full-body rub-down and comes when you call. We could not be happier with this guy! Thank you, Marin Humane!” ~ Christine
Tails of Marin: Foxtails, grrr, the nemesis of those with dogs who like to hike in the spring and summer time. Read this Tails of Marin on this topic: “Protecting your dog from foxtails.” (This is my handsome boy, Boomer, sporting a foxtail mask :).
Do you want to be in a parade?! Well, now’s your chance! Marin Humane will be participating in the Fourth of July Parade in Novato!! We’re looking for a few more volunteers who would like to join Marin Humane staff and Board members promote our “Pets Inclusive Novato” program – walk along our Marin Humane vehicles wearing a Pets Inclusive Novato t-shirt, and carry a small sign about this special program! It’ll be fun!! Here are some details: Timing: 8:30am staging in downtown Novato; 10:00am parade start; finished around noon. Length: The parade route is about 3/4 of a mile. Pets: Pets aren’t allowed at the event unless they are specifically part of a parade entry. Please let me know if you’d like to join the parade!
Another Tails of Marin: With the summer travel season kicking off, a lot of people are going on vacation — or at least making plans to. For those of us with pets, travel planning means extra considerations — and often added costs. Having a reliable person to care for our animals while we’re away can make or break our travel plans. Here’s this week’s Tails of Marin article, “Going on vacation – Find the right care for your pets while you’re away.” Check out Lisa Bloch’s dog, Bowie, on the far right relaxing with his friends at the pet sitter’s!
With appreciation!
Candace
