Greetings Volunteers,

It’s Adopt a Shelter Cat Month! Spread the word — our cats can’t wait to meet you, and you, and you, and you! Check out all our purr-fect felines on our website here, including Chocolate, a senior sweetheart looking for a quiet home with a comfy lap. He’s 14 years old and his previous guardians had nothing but great things to say about him. They said that Chocolate is a mellow fellow who wants a lap to cuddle in and someone to give him head rubs. Although he can be shy at first and is still adjusting to the shelter, this sweetheart is endearingly affectionate and friendly. He looks superb for his age and has so much love to give! We know Chocolate will be a loving companion for a lucky someone!

Shelter update: We currently have 311 animals in our collective care. 236 are at Marin Humane: 88 animals in foster and 148 animals in the shelter/Kitty Corner, including: 19 dogs, 10 puppies, 54 cats, 29 kittens, 11 rabbits, 7 guinea pigs, 5 rodents, 5 reptiles, and 8 birds. 75 animals are with the Hopalong Foster Program: 11 animals are in the Oakland office and 64 are in foster or offsite adoption sites!

Adoption update: Happy Wednesday! And welcome to another magical adoption slideshow! Congratulations to all the adopters! ❤ Also enjoy the Adoption Report to bring even more cheer to your day!

Hopalong happenings: We were thrilled to host volunteers, fosters, and donors at the Hopalong Foster Program Open House last week. Good food, good wine, good conversation, and great people made for a delightful afternoon. If you haven’t made your way to the new Hopalong digs in Oakland, head on over; it’s a fabulous new space for the animals and people!

Volunteer High Five to mulch movers! Yesterday afternoon, I was informed that mounds and mounds of mulch needed to be moved into the Redwood Park Tuesday morning. The Redwood Park is one of our dog parks enjoyed by clients coming to Marin Humane for dog training classes. It was not in the best of shape with weeds and such making it a less than inviting and safe for the dogs. I sent out a last minute “help needed” email to volunteers, and lo and behold, nine volunteers showed up at 9am Tuesday! Some folks even brought their own rakes, shovels, and wheelbarrows — how awesome is that?! Heartfelt and huge thanks to the “mulch movers” Becky Mumma, Betsy McGee, Cindy Flinn, Dan Freeman, Haley McClellan, James Childers, Jeff Bacciocco, Laura Schepps, and Miguel Aguerrebere. Your efforts and good cheer made the job go so smoothly we even finished in record time! ~ Candace, Maintenance and B&T staff

Tails of Marin: This week’s Tails of Marin article courtesy of WildCare. “Spring and summer are always the busiest seasons in WildCare’s wildlife hospital. The warmer months represent “baby season” for wildlife, when the majority of wild animals in Marin give birth to, or hatch, their young. When something happens to separate babies from their parents, WildCare is here to admit orphaned wildlife and raise them to be healthy and ready to return to the wild.” Read the full piece here: “WildCare seeing an influx of baby animals.”

Volunteer High Five to Karen Gulmon! “A huge round of paws and applause for our behavior superhero, Karen Gulmon! Karen goes above and beyond by offering post-adoption behavior consultations!  Her dedication doesn’t stop when an animal finds their forever home — she’s there to guide new pet parents through the ups and downs, making sure love and understanding lead the way. Because of Karen, more pets stay adopted, more families feel supported, and more tails keep wagging. Karen is not just changing lives — she’s building unbreakable bonds. Here are some numbers! In 2024 Behavior & Training did 79 post adoption consultations and Karen performed the lion’s share by taking on 56 of those consultations. High Five for being a calm, compassionate, and expert voice when it matters most. We’re lucky to have Karen in the pack!” ~ Virginia Grainger, Shelter Behavior Manager

Volunteer High Five to Harriette Grooh! “We’d like to give a big Volunteer High Five to Harriette for a fairly unusual task! We’re lucky to receive donations of raw/freeze dried meat treats that are poultry or beef based. In order to avoid any risk of avian flu contamination, we give the products to Harriette and she takes them home and bakes them at the required temperature. This is especially important because our dogs on sensitive tummy diets can only have plain poultry treats, so they rely on this type of treat for their enrichment. Thank you, Harriette for going the extra mile to ensure the treats we give our shelter animals are safe (and tasty)!” ~ Kyle and Lauren, Animal Care

Marin Humane honored! We were honored to present the Novato City Council with a seal from the Pet Inclusive Novato program that was launched by our Advocacy Committee earlier this year! CEO Nancy McKenney was joined by Brian Cooley, head of our Advocacy Committee; members of our board of directors; and several staff members local to Novato. Pet Inclusive Novato recognizes, supports, and celebrates pet-inclusive spaces around town, such as housing, restaurants, hotels, retailers, workplaces, and more. We’ve already awarded the PIN seal to a handful of local businesses with more in the works! We believe cities are better when pets and people are together! Learn more about Pet Inclusive Novato here.

Have a wonderful week!
