Greetings Volunteers,

One of the many things I love about working at Marin Humane is the collaborative spirit. Last week, Pasadena Humane took in almost 100 mice and hamsters from one household. When they put out the word for a little help, Marin Humane asked one of our volunteer animal transporters if they could drive to Pasadena. With so few adoptable hamsters in our local area, we decided it’d be a good time to help out and transfer in some new itty bitty buddies!  Bubu Lubu, pictured here, was one of the first hamsters to get adopted. Hamsters make great pets so if you’ve been hankering after a new hammy friend, come meet Reeses Pieces, Trolli Gummy Shark, Cookies and Cream, or Curious George!

Shelter update: We currently have 299 animals in our collective care. 141 are at our Novato campus, including 29 dogs, 2 puppies, 58 cats, 14 kittens, 9 rabbits, 6 guinea pigs, 13 rodents, 1 reptile, 5 birds, and 4 fowl. Six animals are in our Oakland office; 16 are at Kitty Corner and the Woodlands stores; and 136 are in foster homes! And last but not least, 53 animals were adopted in the past week!

Adoption update: Yay for Wednesdays! Smiles all around! These adorable pets are off to their forever homes and we couldn’t be happier! Here’s the Adoption Report for the full scoop on who went home!

Hopalong happenings: It was a busy weekend for the Hopalong Foster program! All of the dogs that went to the mobile adoption event at Woodlands Greenbrae location were adopted! We want to highlight Banana in particular. This puppy came to Marin Humane but despite staff and volunteers’ best efforts, Banana struggled with mouthiness. The staff thought that a foster home might be good for him, so we placed him with a foster volunteer. In just a couple of weeks at a foster home, Banana became gentler and more relaxed when meeting new people and dogs. We’re delighted to report that Banana was adopted this past weekend to a woman who is familiar with pit bulls and wants to do lots of outdoor activities with him. Congratulations, Banana! Also a big thank you to all the staff and volunteers involved in his success story – it takes a village.

Tails of Marin: Just about 10 days ago, we set our clocks back. Regardless of what our clocks say, one thing is clear: With more people active and out on the roads during dusk and into the evening, our paths may cross more frequently with wildlife. This time of year means our wildlife neighbors are beginning to migrate and forage for food in preparation for winter. Juvenile coyotes are leaving their families to venture out on their own, deer are in their mating season, and less daylight means an increased risk of animals getting hit by cars. Read this week’s Tails of Marin, “Shorter days bring more wildlife sightings” and some tips for preventing any wildlife tragedies.

Save the date (and some room)! Our Middle School after-school service club, Roots & Shoots, will be holding a bake sale this Friday, November 14, from 4:00-5:30. Proceeds will benefit our very own Veterinary Clinic! We will have chocolate chip cookies, brownies, muffins, and more! Vegan and gluten-free treats will also be on offer. For the first time ever, we will be able to accept credit card payments! Thanks, and save the date!

Happy ending! “Bambi is doing well and making herself right at home. We have changed her name to Roxy. She wasn’t responding much to Bambi and yet she started responding very well to Roxy. Yes, she’s a very active dog. Hellloooo, she still a pup. She can drive our dogs nuts sometime, but that’s OK. They will put her in her place. She’s got lots of room to run in the backyard. Roxy now LOVES my husband and follows us everywhere. Didn’t take long. She’s warming up to my son, who had brought over my grand puppy to spend time with her as well. She loves to cuddle in the evenings on the couch with us and sometimes with our little old lady pooch, Paloma. We find it hard to believe she slept in a kennel as she’s very keen on jumping on the bed to sleep there. Again, she loves to cuddle.”

Hope you have a wonderful week!
