Greetings Volunteers,

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Clear the Shelters, we’re offering $10 adoption fees for ALL our animals this weekend! Spread the word to family and friends to visit us at any of our locations or mobile events on Saturday, Sept. 7 & Sunday, Sept. 8, and pay just $10 to adopt your new best friend. Let’s clear the shelters! Here’s where can you find us this weekend:

-> Our main shelter campus in Novato

-> Kitty Corner in San Anselmo

-> Bark & Meow Around the Block at Berkeley Humane on Saturday

-> Woodlands Pet Food & Treats: Kitten adoptions will be held at all locations on Saturday & Sunday, and dog adoptions will be held at the Mill Valley location on Saturday only, 12-3pm.

Thank you NBC Universal for supporting shelters and rescues!

Shelter update: We currently have 311 animals in our collective care. 231 are at Marin Humane: 99 animals in foster and 134 animals in the shelter/Kitty Corner, including: 19 dogs, 2 puppies, 61 cats, 28 kittens, 6 rabbits, 4 guinea pigs, 6 rodents, 3 reptiles, and 5 birds. 68 animals are with Hopalong: 24 animals are in the Oakland office and 44 cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies are in foster or offsite adoption sites!

Adoptions update: Welcome to September! We closed out August with an incredible week of adoptions. Watch these lucky animals head home in our weekly slideshow if you need a smile! And for the full scoop, here’s the Adoption Report!

Hopalong happenings! Hopalong’s staff enjoyed the long holiday weekend, and we hope most of you did too! We’re so grateful to our small but mighty team of cat care volunteers who labored to take care of all the kitties in our Oakland office over Labor Day weekend! And we’re also grateful to all our foster homes who cared for our animals at home! Meanwhile, our mobile adoption event volunteers enjoyed a much-deserved break, since they had already completed our 4 usual monthly mobile adoption events earlier in August. We’re looking forward to jumping back into our mobile adoption events now that it’s September, and this Saturday we’ve got two events! One will be our usual dog mobile adoption event at the Mill Valley Woodlands Pet Food & Treats Store, and the other will be at Bark and Meow Around the Block in Berkeley. If you’re looking to add another member to your family, or want to enjoy the family-friendly street fair, we hope to see you there!

San Quentin Pen Pals update: Each week, we share stories from our Pen Pals program at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, which matches specially-selected inmates who work in the center’s firehouse with shelter dogs in need of a little extra TLC. The inmates volunteer to live full-time with the dogs while working in the firehouse either as firefighters or emergency first responders, and our Behavior & Training staff provide the handlers with extensive training in dog behavior.

Not surprisingly, many of the volunteers in this powerful program form deep and lasting bonds with the dogs in their care, so saying goodbye to a dog is often bittersweet. While the inmates are thrilled to know their temporary canine companion is headed to a loving home and feel pride for the role they played, they also (understandably) miss the dogs with whom they’ve spent so much time. Luckily, serendipitous timing has allowed some of the dogs to find their forever homes with their handlers when the inmates head home on parole. These adoptions are incredibly special because they symbolize a second chance for both the dogs and their new guardians! Sip & Shop Art & Craft Market: We’re planning a “sip and shop” event on December 13th where Marin Humane staff and volunteers can sell their handicrafts and/or art. We know there are a lot of talented volunteers among our ranks, so if you’d like to participate and sell your crafts or artwork, please see this flyer for more details, including who to RSVP to and what we’ll provide each vendor: Sip and Shop Art and Craft Market. Entries are open through the end of September. If you have any questions, please contact Michelle at moga@marinhumane.org.

Tails of Marin: It’s September and that means it’s National Preparedness Month! This week’s Tails of Marin edition was written by our friends at Ready Marin and hits to all of us with pets at home: “Make sure your disaster plans include your pets.” In fact, we hope to see you at Ember Stomp on Saturday, September 7th at the Marin Civic Center!

Have a wonderful week!
