Greetings Volunteers,

Today is Inauguration Day, a day of new beginnings. With that in mind, we hope you enjoy the updates on the shelter and adoptions!

Shelter update: We currently have 55 animals in our care: 38 animals in foster and 17 in the shelter. The shelter residents include: 6 dogs, 6 cats, 1 kitten, 2 roosters, 1 pigeon, and 1 guinea pig. Since March 16th, there have been 1,590 adoptions :-).

Adoptions updateWelcome to another wonderful “Going Home” slideshow! Even with the current stay at home restrictions, a few animals, including our resident mice, found fur-ever homes. Congratulations to everyone who took home a new pal and thank you for adopting!

Covid canine detectives: As you may already know, dogs are born to sniff. The area of the canine brain that is devoted to analyzing scent is 40 times greater than that of the human brain and dogs can identify smells at least 1,000 times better than we can! The dog’s superior sense of smell comes from 220 million olfactory receptors in their nose. So it’s no surprise that dogs are excellent Covid detectives. Read more here.

Tails of Marin: Please enjoy this week’s Tails of Marin celebrating “Veganuary!” Whether you’re looking to improve your health, save animals from factory farming, protect the environment, or other reasons, it’s not too late to try vegan this January.

Special author event that benefits Marin Humane: One of the stars of our Animal-Assisted Therapy program is Dipsea the Irish Wolfhound. Local author and Marin Humane volunteer, Tiffanie DeBartolo, is Dipsea’s pet parent and she’ll be launching her new book at a virtual event at Sausalito Books by the Bay and you’re invited! The best part is that Sausalito Books by the Bay is donating 100% of the book and ticket sales to Marin Humane! Join us tomorrow, Thursday, January 21 at 5:30 pm. Your registration includes the virtual event and a signed copy of Tiffanie’s new book which can be shipped for free or available for pick up. For more information and to register, visit this page. We hope to see you at this interesting virtual event!

Be well, smile often, stay safe.
