Greetings Volunteers,

In a few days, we’ll celebrate the Fourth of July. This year, most of the large fireworks shows have been cancelled, but there may be some random fireworks going off in or near your neighborhood. Loud noises can frighten animals, causing them to panic and even run away from home. In a Tails of Marin article, Fourth of July Fireworks are No Blast For Pets, steps to take are offered to ensure a safe and fun holiday for your four-legged family members.

Shelter Update: We currently have 108 animals in our care. This includes 76 animals in foster and 32 in the shelter. Shelter residents include: 19 cats, 10 kittens, 1 dog, 1 rabbit and 1 duck.

Adoptions Update: Since March 16th, 468 animals have been adopted. This time last year we did 433 adoptions at the shelter and 86 at Kitty Corner. Our shelter adoptions are 7% higher than this time last year. When you factor in Kitty Corner adoptions, we are under overall by 10%. Not too shabby! For this week’s adoption slideshow, click here.

Social and Racial Justice in Animal Shelters: Over the past several weeks, many of us at Marin Humane have participated in webinars surrounding social and racial justice in animal welfare organizations. We wanted to share some resources with you. Click here to listen to Looking at Animal Sheltering Through a Racial and Social Justice Lens. There are also an abundance of resources for examining systemic inequity on this site.

Thank you Heather Bowker! Heather retired last week from serving on Marin Humane’s Board for Directors for eight years! Heather served in a variety of roles on the Board, and is known for her strong leadership, dedication and compassion. Earlier this year, Heather was nominated for a Heart of Marin award in the Excellence in Board Leadership category! Enjoy her Heart Of Marin Nomination.

Heather had her own executive coach and leadership development consulting business in San Rafael. Her career in human resources and talent management consulting in Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America spanned more than 30 years. She moved from Europe to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1986, on a three-year work assignment, and never left! Heather and her husband Dennis are passionate about animal protection and advocacy, supporting global, local, and grassroots organizations for all types of animals—wild, domesticated, and farm animals. With a little more spare time now, Heather will continue to enjoy walking with her two adopted German shepherds, tending to her vegetable garden, hiking, swimming, reading, and going to the theater. Thank you Heather for your many years of service to Marin’s animals and people!

Marin Humane Gala, Saturday, September 12 – The Show Must Go On! This year’s gala is going virtual! Stay safe at home and help the animals while enjoying all the fun and excitement delivered to your door. Guests will have the opportunity to bid on our ever-popular silent and live auctions. And for the first time ever, all animals are welcome – cats, dogs (even the naughty ones), chickens, bunnies, etc.!

From Events Manager, Molly Foley: “I am writing on behalf of Marin Humane to ask your help in making this year’s Gala the best we’ve ever done. Please consider donating an item which will be promoted on our Gala website up to a month prior to the big night. The auctions and raffle provide a significant portion of our revenue at the Gala. Popular donations we have received in the past include tickets, gift certificates/cards, wine packages, products, services, travel, and one-of-a-kind experiences. We hope you will support us at the Bay Area’s classiest critter lover’s event! Please complete the Gala 202 Donation Form and send to Molly Foley at mfoley@marinhumane.org.  If you have any questions, please phone 415.506.6265 or email me. Thank you!”

Happy Fourth of July! Hope you and your fur-friends stay healthy over this holiday weekend!
