Greetings Volunteers,

On December 17th one hundred and fourteen years ago, the Marin County Humane Society was formed, thanks to the quiet and compassionate leadership of Ethel Tompkins. Nancy McKenney adds: “As we celebrate the 114th birthday of this organization, it doesn’t go unnoticed that Marin Humane has come a long way and continues to be a strong leader in animal welfare, thanks to its hard-working and dedicated staff and volunteers.” Click here to see how our history lives on!

Shelter update: We currently have 148 animals in our care: 37 animals in foster and 111 animals in the shelter. The shelter residents include: 30 dogs, 1 puppy, 40 cats, 8 kittens, 2 rabbits, 5 guinea pigs, 5 rodents, 6 reptiles, 12 birds, and 2 fowl.

Adoptions update: Happy hump day! Congratulations to last week’s adopters! We can’t think of a better way to kick off this holiday week than adding an awesome new family member, be it a bunny – like our fluffy Angoras who were adopted this week – or a big ol’ dog – like Langston, who finally found his home after months of waiting. Enjoy the adoption slideshow. We still have more wonderful animals ready to brighten your holiday, or your friend’s holiday, or your neighbor’s holiday – spread the word! For the full list of last week’s adoptions, here’s the Adoption Report

Happy ending: “I just wanted to say thank you for setting us up to meet Margo! She is the sweetest pup, and our meeting was exactly as we’d hoped. She settled in at home right away, and she just alternates between tail wagging and snuggling/napping. We feel very lucky to have found her. 🙂 We’re one of those families who started looking at pups to adopt back in April 2020, and I’m so glad that we waited for the right one. She’s perfect for our family, and we love her already. Yesterday we decided to name her Lucy- one of your staff members suggested a Charlie’s Angels name to go with our senior pup Charlie, and the actress Lucy Lou’s name suited her really well. Thank you Ruthie!!”

Volunteer High Five to Neil Lurssen: I’d like to give a special shout out to Neil Lurssen, Dog Pet Pal, B&Tea Blogger, and Dog Profile Writer! This Volunteer High Five is for Neil’s extraordinary help writing and rewriting the profiles of dogs up for adoption. Let’s be honest, sometimes it’s hard for us to find just the right words to convey the wonderfulness of some of the dogs. That’s where Neil comes in. He has a beautiful way with words that paint a picture of a dog that brings a smile to your face, and even better, helps get potential adopters in for a meet and greet.

Neil’s outings with the dogs during his DPP shifts give him ample material for updating profiles of dogs that have been up for adoption for a long time. A fresh story, some new photos, all contribute to bringing more attention to some of our longer-term residents. Neil is also a stellar member of the B&T Blog team. His blogs are always extremely interesting with a wide diversity of topics. Educational and fun! Thank you, Neil, for contributing your writing talents to the Marin Humane B&T department. The staff and doggos really appreciate you :).” ~ Candace Alexander, Volunteer Services

Updated travel policy: If you are planning on traveling outside the Bay Area this holiday season, please review Marin Humane’s Temporary Travel Policy. We are requiring that travelers arriving in or returning to California from other states or countries should test 3-5 days upon arrival. Please contact Candace at should you have any questions.

Tails of Marin: With holiday lights twinkling inside and outside homes, Christmas trees up and decorated with ornaments, and lots of activity, it’s clear we’re in the holiday season. While it’s a festive time for most of us, the season still poses hazards and threats to our pets. Nothing can spoil good cheer like a lost pet or an emergency trip to the veterinarian, so keep these tips in mind when decorating and celebrating.

Columbia Sportswear discount: Marin Humane employees and volunteers have exclusive access to the Columbia Sportswear Employee Store from December 20th – January 17th! Please see the Columbia Sportswear Store Winter Invitation for details. Happy shopping!

Happiest (and healthiest) of holidays to you all,

Candace and Anne
