Resource Guarding

A dog is resource guarding when he lays claim to his food, bed, toys, special person, or anything that he perceives as valuable and prevents people or other dogs from approaching. He may growl, position himself over the item, hard-stare, lunge, or bite perceived threats.

Resource guarding may be genetic, temperament, or learned behavior. People often unknowingly exacerbate the behavior by taking things away from the dog forcefully or failing to respect the dog’s right to be left alone when eating or sleeping. We can teach you how to keep everyone safe and teach your dog that you are not a threat to his stuff.
