Who knew that shopping at the Marin Humane Thrift Shop could help animal overpopulation in Marin?

In 1961, the Marin Humane Society Auxiliary opened the Thrift Shop in downtown San Anselmo. The Thrift Shop’s success was key to the construction and operation of the first subsidized spay and neuter clinic in California, which opened at Marin Humane’s Novato campus in 1973.

Today, the Thrift Shop offers a range of merchandise, including clothes, kitchenware, books, handmade cards, and collectables. All proceeds from the store continue to support the operation of Marin Humane’s Spay/Neuter Clinic, totaling more than $90,000 last year!

The Thrift Shop has been managed by an amazing group of volunteers, the Auxiliary, which consists of over 30 hardworking volunteers who greet their customers six days a week with warmth and a smile. Many loyal customers come in regularly, as often as every day or at least once a week. Some people stop in just for the handmade greeting cards created by volunteer Donna Morrison. Donna’s creations are as affordable as they are adorable. Other shoppers  come in hunting for the hidden treasures, including inexpensive sterling jewelry, clothing, household items, knick knacks and much more!

The Thrift Shop volunteers work diligently to sort through myriad donations, price each item and creatively display them for sale. A few volunteers grow plants at home to sell at the shop while others make jewelry and donate it to the shop for sale. Volunteers also come in early to sort through the dropped-off donations while others come in on their day off to set-up the window displays.

It is an art to utilize the small space of the shop in a way that ensures maximum benefit for the shoppers and for Marin Humane. The Thrift Shop volunteer team makes the magic happen, through their commitment and endless energy. They keep our unique Thrift Shop open as the “re-sale” place for bargain hunters in Marin County.

Noted as the best thrift store with a heart, we are grateful to the Auxiliary for their truly inspiring work on behalf of the animals. If you’re looking for special gifts at a bargain price that will also support our low cost spay/neuter clinic, swing by our shop at 360 San Anselmo Avenue in downtown San Anselmo.
